WW1 France – Croix de Guerre (+ star) – 1914-15


Bronze metal cross with crossed swords dated 1914-15 with silver gilt star on ribbon.

The Croix de Guerre was initiated in 1915 and in addition to beign issued to french troops it was also awarded to allied forces.  The medal was for created in 1915 to recognise valour by French & Allied troops during WW1, similar to the British ‘ Mentioned in Despatches’ but with differing levels of award.  Medals were issued in the field at the time of award and the dating on the medal changed as the war progressed, the final medal bore the date 1914-1918.

This example has the gilt star which denotes it was for ‘Mentioned in Despatches at Corps Level’
